How to Identify a Quality Football Shirt
The football shirt market is full of vastly different quality levels at the same price point. This guide shows you exactly where to look — fabric, emblem, stitching, sponsors, and finishes — to tell in seconds whether a shirt is well-made or not.
The fabric tells almost everything
A good shirt has a polyester with body: it's not transparent against the light, doesn't make a plastic rustling sound, and recovers its shape after being stretched by hand. If you can see skin through white fabric, it's a sign of low grammage.
In player versions, the fabric is thinner by design, but it remains dense and uniform, with well-defined ventilation panels instead of irregular holes.
Emblem and sponsors
The emblem is where cheap copies fail first. In a good embroidery, the stitches are tight, the outlines are sharp, and there are no loose threads on the reverse. In a good heat-applied emblem, the edges are clean and the piece doesn't lift at the corners.
Check the colours: slightly off tones, golds leaning towards yellow, or orangey reds are the most common sign of poor reproduction.
For the main sponsor, check the alignment and symmetry. An off-centre sponsor relative to the emblem is a production defect that never goes unnoticed once you wear the shirt.
Stitching and finishes
Turn the shirt inside out. The seams should be straight, with closed finishes and no skipped stitches. The bottom hem and cuffs are the most subject to wear, so they should be reinforced.
The collar is another immediate indicator: it should have its own structure and return to shape when pulled. Soft collars that become wavy after two washes indicate weak construction.
Labels and internal details
Well-made shirts have a label with fabric composition, legible washing instructions, and in many models, a printed size label instead of sewn, to avoid skin irritation.
Internal details such as reinforcement tape on the shoulder, a lined collar, or a club motto printed on the nape are signs of careful production.
The first washes test
True quality reveals itself after three to five washes. A good shirt retains its colour, doesn't pill on the torso, and maintains the shape of the shoulders. If the fabric becomes rough, if the numbers lift at the edges, or if bobbles appear on the back, it was poor production.
Washing inside out, at 30 °C, without fabric softener and without a tumble dryer, still has the biggest influence on the result — even for an excellent item.
